Shopping Locally

drmazlish

Although you may not realize, shopping locally is just as beneficial for the environment as it is for your local economy.

The more we shop locally, the more we decrease our carbon footprint. When you products from big chain stores, you must take in to account all the processing and all the miles that product took to get to your hands. This shipping and mass production leads to more fuel consumption and air pollution. An added damage is the packaging on the shipped items. For example, amazon used 456 million pounds of plastic packaging in 2019 alone.

Shopping locally also benefits wildlife. When you shop at local farmers markets, you are also helping local animals. When local farms can afford to stay open, they are less likely to sell their lands to big business developers. These big farming companies don't work hard to ensure the safety of the environment. Also, you can typically walk or bike to these types of markets, whereas you must drive to a Costco or a Walmart.

Overall, we can all benefit massively from shopping locally, and it isn't a tough switch to make. Please help your community feel better along with the environment!
